Yoko had lived for years-for all her old life, it seemed-watching the faces of the people around her, searching for signs of what they wanted. Were they happy? Were they angry? Did they like her? How could she make them like her more? She'd spend her life afraid of confrontation, willing to do anything to avoid a scolding.

It occurred to her that maybe she hadn't just been a coward. Maybe she was lazy. It was easier to just do what people wanted her to do rather than think for herself. It took too much energy to force her own will on others; it was much easier to go with the flow-much easier to act like the "good girl" and slowly went away all the parts of herself that didn't fit.

She had been a lazy coward, then. More than anything else that was why she wanted to go home now. She would return to the world she knew, and she would live her life entirely differently this time. She wanted another chance.
